The residents of the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside continue to suffer from travel between the two banks of the Euphrates River, especially through the al-Ashara crossing. This is due to repeated drownings and ferry accidents, in addition to the high crossing fees, according to a Deir Ezzor 24 Network correspondent.
Abu Saddam, a security official at the al-Ashara crossing, told Deir Ezzor 24 Network, “There are no accurate statistics on the number of accidents that have occurred at this crossing. The reasons for the recurring accidents are the use of primitive boats, the high water level of the Euphrates River, and the long distance between the two banks.”
Abu Saddam explained that the al-Ashara Bridge is of great strategic importance, as it is the only artery for the area extending from the city of Albukamal to the city of al-Ashara on both banks of the river, and it connects the city of al-Ashara to the village of Darnaj. He added that the bridge was bombed twice during the years of the revolution, the first by the former regime and the second by international coalition aircraft.
He appealed to humanitarian organizations and relevant authorities to consider the residents’ situation and find urgent solutions to repair the bridge.
It’s worth noting that the destruction of the Al-Ashara Bridge has forced residents to rely on river ferries as their primary means of transportation between the two banks of the Euphrates River.
