In a stark reminder of the dangers still lurking beneath Syria’s war-torn soil, a landmine explosion claimed the life of a demining specialist and wounded several of his colleagues earlier today in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
The explosion occurred in the arid outskirts of Al-Mayadin city, where a team was working to clear remnants of deadly mines left behind by the former Assad regime. Among the victims was a well-known member of the engineering unit, known locally as “Abu al-Abbas Handasa,” who died on the spot while attempting to neutralize a cluster of hidden explosives. Several other team members sustained injuries during the operation.
The incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by unexploded ordnance scattered across the region, long after active fighting has ceased.
Just a day earlier, another explosion rattled Al-Mayadin when an improvised explosive device detonated along a main road as a vehicle belonging to the Internal Security Forces passed by. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that incident.
The mounting danger highlights the critical need for expanded mine clearance efforts and continued vigilance to protect both civilians and those working to make the region safe again.
