An archaeological discovery in Raqqa after a 15-year hiatus

The city of Raqqa witnessed the launch of the first emergency archaeological excavation work in more than 15 years, in a private residential property located on the western border of the old mosque, known as the “Old Mosque”.

Initial excavation and prospecting revealed well-preserved archaeological floors dating back to the Islamic era, a discovery that will open the way for further studies and excavations that will contribute to documenting the urban and cultural history of Raqqa.

This excavation is of particular importance, as it is the first of its kind in the area in many years. It comes within the framework of protecting archaeological evidence and preserving the city’s historical heritage, particularly in light of the urban expansion the region is witnessing.

The excavation results are expected to contribute to providing new information about the nature of the urban fabric of Raqqa and the stages of its development during the Islamic era, thus enhancing efforts to preserve its antiquities and cultural heritage.
