Various areas of the Hasakah countryside have recently witnessed repeated targeting and theft of oil pipelines, in the absence of deterrent measures to limit this phenomenon.
In the most recent incident, unknown persons broke one of the oil transport lines in the area between the villages of “Umm Jafar” and “Al-Abtakh” in the Tal Hamis countryside, with the aim of stealing crude oil, which led to large quantities of it leaking into the surrounding lands.
The spill caused direct environmental damage, as the oil spread into the soil and reached some small water channels, threatening the local ecosystem.
Farmers in the region expressed their fears of long-term repercussions of this pollution, especially on soil fertility and the quality of agricultural crops, at a time when there was no rapid response to contain the leak and address its effects.
These incidents come amid increasing challenges facing the agricultural sector in the region, exacerbating the suffering of the people and threatening their sources of livelihood.
