The Engineering Battalion of the Syrian Ministry of Defense has begun carrying out mine clearance operations in Deir Ezzor desert, in a move aimed at reducing the risks threatening the lives of civilians and securing the area, following the increase in incidents resulting from the explosion of remnants of war during the recent period.
These measures have come in response to repeated appeals made by the people of the region, who expressed their growing concern about the spread of mines and unexploded ordnance in large areas of the desert, and the direct threat they cause to the lives and property of residents, especially with many of them relying on movement and grazing in those areas.
The Deir Ezzor desert has recently witnessed several painful incidents resulting from the explosion of landmines left behind by the former regime, which resulted in civilian casualties and injuries, and sparked a state of constant fear among the population, in addition to the impact on daily activities and economic movement in the region.
Military engineering teams are combing mine-contaminated lands using specialized equipment and techniques, with the aim of securing roads and vital spaces and removing the inherent risks that hinder the return of normal life, as part of broader efforts to enhance stability and protect civilians.
