AL-BUKAMAL, Syria Telecommunications companies Syriatel and MTN have announced the rollout of an initial plan aimed at improving phone and internet services in the eastern Syrian city of Al-Bukamal and its surrounding countryside, according to local reports.
The effort, scheduled to begin next week, will involve the installation of three new cellular towers two along the Deir Ezzor–Al-Bukamal highway and one within the city itself. The objective is to expand network coverage and address long-standing complaints over poor service quality.
“This is just the beginning,” said Abdulrazzaq al-Ali, a maintenance technician with Syriatel, in an interview with DeirEzzor24, a local media outlet. “The plan is designed to be scalable. More towers will be added if needed.”
The move follows months of mounting frustration among residents, who have faced erratic internet access and limited cell coverage. The situation has been exacerbated by repeated incidents of tower theft and vandalism, according to Mr. al-Ali. He also cited the recent return of large numbers of displaced residents to Al-Bukamal, placing added strain on already fragile infrastructure.
Much of the city remains underserved, with frequent outages and weak signal strength, reflecting a broader challenge facing many war-affected areas in Syria, where telecom infrastructure has been neglected or damaged.
As the city seeks to rebuild and reestablish basic services, residents hope the new investment will mark a turning point for digital connectivity in a region long cut off from reliable communication.
