A large number of drivers in Deir Ezzor use old buses as a means of internal transportation within the city’s neighborhoods and outskirts, according to a reporter of the DeirEzzor24 Network.
Our reporter said that there has been recently an increasing demand for public transportation buses due to the high fares of public transportation (taxis) within the city’s neighborhoods. Fares range between 10,000 and 15,000 SYP, sometimes reaching 20,000 SYP. This has prompted residents to rely on public transportation buses as a less expensive option.
Marhaf al-Ahmad, a law student from Raqqa province, confirmed that taxi fares are high, which is why he and his friends, who come from Raqqa to study at Al-Furat University, use public transportation buses to get around Deir Ezzor.
Mahmoud al-Hadi, a high school student, said, “The majority of students, both male and female, rely on public transportation buses to get from school to home, as well as to the markets.”
This crisis in the internal transportation sector stems from the influx of large numbers of students from various Syrian cities to Deir Ezzor, on the one hand, and the return of large numbers of previously displaced residents, on the other. This has led to overcrowding and increased demand for buses.
The buses used in Deir Ezzor are models from the 1980s and 1990s, known locally as “hop-hop-on-hop-offs.” Despite their age, these buses met some of the city’s needs, given the low population density during the former regime.
Students in particular, and residents in general, have appealed to the Syrian government and relevant authorities to develop the internal transportation system in Deir Ezzor by providing larger and more modern buses than those currently in use.
