Dr. Musab Al-Buraidi announced his resignation from his position as Dean of the Faculty of Petrochemical Engineering at Al-Furat University in Deir Ezzor, following an incident in which he said he was threatened with a weapon inside his office, according to a post published on the faculty’s official page.
In a statement attributed to Al-Buraidi, he explained that he had served as dean in the years 2014, 2021, and 2025, describing the faculty as “the icon of Al-Furat University and a beacon of knowledge.” He pointed to a number of difficulties he faced recently, particularly disputes with the university administration over the scheduling of practical exams, which he said were postponed more than once, before the dates were changed again without adhering to prior understandings with the university presidency, as he put it.
On the other hand, eyewitnesses among students and employees at the faculty, in consistent accounts, denied that any weapon was brandished inside the dean’s office as stated in the announcement, confirming that what occurred was limited to an administrative dispute related to the exams file.
According to university sources, the decision to postpone the exams had been issued by the University Council, taking into account the prevailing weather conditions in the governorates of Raqqa and Al-Hasakah, similar to what occurred at a number of other universities. The sources considered this to be a main reason behind the tension between the dean and the university administration.
The sources also pointed to a record of previous disputes involving Al-Buraidi within the faculty, accusing him of adopting a strict approach in dealing with students. Others spoke of his past relationships with official figures during the era of the former regime, considering that these relationships were reflected in his management style at the faculty allegations on which no official comment has been issued so far.
As of the time of preparing this report, Al-Furat University had not released an official statement clarifying the circumstances of the incident or commenting on the resignation, amid anticipation of the results of any potential administrative investigation into what happened.
