Deir Ezzor, Syria — A mass grave containing the remains of five unidentified men was uncovered on Sunday in the Al-Ruwad Housing area of Deir Ezzor city, according to a report from DeirEzzor24.
Local sources say a resident of the neighborhood alerted authorities after noticing unusual soil disturbances in an abandoned area previously used for military purposes. The site had long been deserted, raising suspicions due to its history and strategic importance during the conflict.
In response to the report, civil defense and police teams rushed to the location, where they unearthed the skeletal remains and transferred them to forensic specialists for examination.
Al-Baraa Al-Hamad, a Civil Defense official, confirmed to DeirEzzor24 that the identities of the victims have not yet been determined. The remains have been sent for forensic analysis to uncover further details.
The exact number of bodies at the site has yet to be confirmed, but so far, the remains of five individuals have been recovered.
The area where the mass grave was found had previously served as a base for Assad regime forces, raising suspicions that the victims may have been executed or forcibly disappeared during the early years of the Syrian revolution.
Families in Deir Ezzor now await official statements to determine whether the victims are among the hundreds of individuals who went missing under mysterious circumstances over the past decade.
