Residents of the Al-Hamidiyah neighborhood in Deir Ezzor city are complaining about the accumulation of garbage in the neighborhood’s alleys, especially the narrow ones, amid growing fears of the spread of diseases and epidemics, according to a reporter of the DeirEzzor24 network.
Our problem said that the waste problem is one of the most prominent challenges facing residents in the area, especially with the lack of full access of sanitation workers to these alleys. This leads to the accumulation of dirt and their transformation into breeding grounds for harmful insects and disease vectors, most notably the currently widespread leishmaniasis disease.
Ms. Umm Ahmed, a resident of the neighborhood, said, “Part of the problem is due to the lack of awareness among some residents who dispose of garbage haphazardly.”
She called on the media to shed light on this and other problems in the affected neighborhoods, both those destroyed by the war and those partially restored.
Other residents expressed concern about the increased risk of disease, especially with the approach of summer and rising temperatures, which accelerate waste decomposition and increase the proliferation of insects and rodents.
They emphasized that the problem is not new; rather, it has been reported repeatedly on social media and media platforms, but has not received an effective response from the relevant authorities. Alternatively, they asserted that the measures taken were temporary, and that chaos soon returned. This prompted them to re-raise the issue publicly, hoping their voices would be heard.
It is worth noting that the problem of waste removal from Deir Ezzor neighborhoods has become a shared problem for residents and the Deir Ezzor Municipality, due to the lack of adequate mechanisms to serve all areas, as employees have stated on more than one occasion.
