The village of Al-Hisha in the northern countryside of Raqqa is witnessing a state of rising anxiety among the residents, against the backdrop of the rapid spread of leishmaniasis, known locally as “Habbat Al-Sena”, as about a thousand confirmed cases were recorded in a short period.
According to local sources, a medical committee affiliated with the Raqqa Health Directorate arrived in the village in an attempt to provide the necessary healthcare to the injured. However, the large number of cases exceeded the capacity of the medical teams, making them unable to cover all patients amid severe pressure and a clear shortage of medicines and medical supplies.
Residents attributed the outbreak to the significant deterioration in the environment and services, especially the spread of stagnant water and the absence of pest control campaigns, which contributed to the significant proliferation of flies that transmit the disease.
The villagers are calling on the relevant authorities and health organizations to intervene urgently and extensively, including sending additional medical teams, providing medicines, and implementing intensive spraying campaigns, to limit the spread of the disease and control the deteriorating health situation in the area.
