In 2013, civilians in the liberated neighborhoods of Deir Ezzor would wake up to the sounds of violent explosions, heavy artillery shelling and air strikes, as the the regime was attempting to force the FSA out of the neighborhoods.
On Sunday, October 20, 2013, Assad’s warplanes carried out air strikes on the Joura neighborhood, targeting the Adnan Maliki School, which led to several deaths and injuries among students and teachers who were present inside.
Among the martyrs:
- The teacher Malak Abdel Monaim
- The student Ayat Ghassan
- The student Ahmed Rafi Sara
- The student Hossam Ahmed Al Raibi
The head of the school suffered life threatening injuries. The Zaki Al-Arsozi schoolsustained partial damages in the air strikes as well.
