A large number of residents of the Hawija Sakar area in the city of Deir Ezzor have begun returning to their homes, which they had abandoned for years, despite the near-total absence of basic services such as water and electricity, according to a report by DeirEzzor24 Network.
One resident, known as “Abu Zuhair,” told DeirEzzor24 that a significant portion of the population has returned to their homes and begun repairing and rebuilding them using their own efforts, despite the major challenges they face chief among them being the lack of public services.
“Abu Omar,” another local resident, explained that people are suffering from a severe drinking water crisis due to the damage inflicted on water pipelines during years of conflict, which has resulted in a complete breakdown of the water network.
He added that the ongoing water outages are a serious hardship, especially with the high summer temperatures, which make access to water even more critical.
Abu Omar also pointed out that the electricity situation is just as bad. The local power network has been completely destroyed and was subjected to theft and vandalism during the time various forces controlled the area. He noted that there is currently only one power line available, but it carries only a hot wire without a neutral line, which barely allows residents to operate a single light bulb or charge a mobile phone.
Faced with these harsh conditions, residents have issued urgent appeals to the relevant authorities—foremost among them the Deir Ezzor Water Directorate to expedite maintenance work and the rehabilitation of infrastructure, particularly the water networks, given the severe conditions and rising temperatures, coupled with the lack of alternative solutions.
Despite all these challenges, the return of residents to Hawija Sakar reflects their attachment to their land and their determination to bring life back to it, while awaiting government support to help improve conditions and restore essential services vital for a dignified life.
