During the month of Ramadan, Al-Ommal neighborhood in Deir-Ezzor witnesses remarkable activity by a charitable restaurant that has allocated part of its services to provide iftar meals to the most needy families in the area.
In a scene that reflects the reality of seasonal relief services, a number of heads of households flock to the restaurant before breakfast time, where ready-made meals are distributed according to an organizational mechanism that ensures that assistance reaches the beneficiaries. One of the four stands in line, carrying his identification document, in preparation for receiving his daily share, which meets part of his family’s needs.
This initiative comes within the efforts of civil society organizations and individual initiatives that seek to reduce the living burdens on the population in light of the rise in food prices and the low purchasing power of the majority of families working in the informal sector.
The charity restaurant, which has been receiving cases daily since the beginning of the holy month, relies in its operation on donations from benefactors and volunteers from the region, and mainly targets families registered on social targeting lists, in addition to irregular daily workers.
It is noteworthy that the Al-Ommal neighborhood is one of the densely populated neighborhoods in Deir Ezzor, and its residents suffer from weak basic services and low income levels, which makes such temporary initiatives a source of additional support for a large segment of its residents during the holy month.
