The financial affairs office of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards militia distributed salaries to the village guards in the northern countryside of Deir Ezzor in their headquarters in the town of Marat. Their number range between 5 and 15 members in each village, most of them have honorary ranks without weapons, and they hold Iranian military cards that allow them to pass through the checkpoints, in return for a monthly salary of 30 thousand pounds, and their tasks are to try to spread the Shiite doctrine in the region.
The employees in each village occupy the positions of “the sheikh of the clan”, the mukhtar, the Wajih and the education official. On the other hand, the number of the village guard militia members as a whole is 1,500, distributed over the villages of Deir Ezzor, and they are affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and led by the so-called Hajj Hussein. They have a presence on the river shore adjacent to the SDF-controlled areas, their salaries reach 75,000 and they are armed with light weapons.
