Raqqa has witnessed a significant increase in the prices of vegetables and basic commodities recently, due to increased shipping costs to the city center.
A number of merchants in the city of Raqqa confirmed that the rise in prices is due to the destruction of bridges leading to the city, which forces trucks to take alternative routes through the Euphrates Dam or the Mansoura area to reach the city center, which raises transportation fees and increases the burdens on merchants.
Traders explained that these additional costs are directly reflected on the consumer within the city, as transportation differences are added to the final selling prices.
Vegetables imported from the eastern and southern (Shamiyah) countryside witnessed a significant increase in prices, in addition to a slight increase in the prices of food and basic commodities coming from Damascus and Aleppo countryside towards the city of Raqqa.
In the meantime, the residents appealed to the concerned authorities, especially the control and customs departments, to intensify their tours of the markets and control prices, especially with the advent of the month of Ramadan, to limit any exploitation and ensure price stability in the city’s markets.
