Public security forces succeeded in arresting Fadi Al-Afais and Dawoud Al-Toukan, two of the most prominent figures of the defunct Assad regime in Deir Ezzor, during a security operation in Damascus.
Fadi Al-Afais, originally from the town of Al-Husseiniyah northwest of Deir Ezzor, formed an armed group around 14 years ago, claiming at the time to be affiliated with the Free Syrian Army. He went on to steal equipment from the paper factory and the train station, selling them as scrap. When Daesh entered the region, Al-Afais joined them, and later aligned himself with the Iran-backed Baqar Brigade led by Nawaf Al-Bashir. He eventually shifted allegiance among Russian-backed militias until the fall of the defunct regime.
As for Dawoud Al-Toukan, he was a prominent leader in the Military Security militia in Deir Ezzor province, which committed numerous violations against the local population. He played a significant role in the arrest and elimination of anyone opposing the defunct regime or the Iranian militias in Deir Ezzor.
The past few days have seen a wave of arrests targeting symbols of the Assad regime, including Daas Daas, head of the State Security Branch in Deir Ezzor, along with Al-Afais and Al-Toukan. Most recently, Wassim Al-Assad, a cousin of the head of the defunct regime, was arrested yesterday.
