On Sunday, May 23, the Qalayean tribe in Deir Ezzor released a statement rejecting the presidential elections held by Assad regime in Syria. The tribe disassociated itself from any of its members who will vote for Bashar al-Assad, calling them criminal accomplices.
The statement read:
“In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
The Qalayean tribe statement
In the current circumstances going on in Syria, which is occupied by Assad gangs and their Russian and Iranian allies, as this ridiculous show (presidential election) is being held, unknown people started to declare their support for the criminal Bashar al-Assad, who committed the biggest massacre in human history against the Syrian people. He killed more than a million martyrs, displaced half of the Syrian people, and arrested and caused to disappear more than 500,000. Accordingly, the Qalayean tribe strongly emphasizes commitment to the principles of the great Syrian revolution, which is above all blood ties and kinship relations. The tribes disassociates itself from any of its members who became shabbiha and loyalists of the criminal Assad regime, holds them fully responsible for supporting Assad in the elections and considers them accomplices in the crimes committed by the regime. We call on all free and honorable tribes and their branches in the region to follow the right path by sticking to the principles of the revolution of freedom and dignity, rejecting anyone who supports Assad regime by word or deed, and renewing committment to the revolution of pride and dignity. Long live free Syria.
Released on 23 May 2021”
The statement was released as many pro-Bashar al-Assad figures have used the names of Deir Ezzor’s tribes to support Assad in his election campaign, at the behest of Assad regime’s security branches.
