The rate of thefts and looting has increased recently in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor, especially in the town of Al-Masrib, where most of the thefts target civilian property, and are carried out by soldiers and elements affiliated with the Assad and Iran militias. Locals prefer not to file complaints against the thieves. They are forced to say they are carried out by unknown persons, because of the people’s fear of being arrested.
The last of the thefts occured on “Monday”, when members of the 17th Division stormed a cafe in the market, trying to steal the generator and 3 motorcycles, but they left them when the people sensed them and ran away
