The areas cultivated with cotton crops in Al-Hasakah Governorate during the current season exceeded the established plan, as the actual cultivated area reached about 8,135 hectares, compared to 7,300 hectares within the agricultural plan.
The Assistant Director of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in Hasakah, Eng. Ezz El-Din Jassim Al-Hesso, said that exceeding the plan reflects a relative demand from farmers to grow cotton, despite the challenges facing this crop.
Al-Hesso explained that the most prominent challenges are the use of unknown or unimproved varieties, the shortage of labor, the absence of some production requirements, in addition to the significant increase in the prices of seeds, fertilizers and fuel.
Al-Ya’rubiyah topped the governorate’s areas in terms of cotton cultivation areas, with approximately 2,500 hectares, followed by Tell Brak with 780 hectares, then Markada and Tell Hamis with 700 hectares each, while the areas in Al-Shaddadi reached 500 hectares, Qamishli 300 hectares, Al-Hasakah 150 hectares, and Amoda 60 hectares.
These data indicate the continued presence of the cotton crop within agricultural activity in Hasakah, with farmers needing to provide production requirements, improved varieties, and the necessary labor to ensure improved productivity.
