Heavy rains and floods in the region caused a rise in turbidity in the Euphrates River, which led to the temporary suspension of drinking water pumping stations in the city of Raqqa and the town of Maadan, amid residents’ anticipation of the resumption of pumping operations in the coming period.

The Water Directorate in Raqqa explained that the high turbidity of the river’s water as a result of rainfall prompted the temporary suspension of all stations that rely on Euphrates water, in order to ensure the safety of the water provided to citizens.

The Directorate added that the specialized technical teams are continuously monitoring the turbidity levels in the river, stressing that the restart of the stations depends on their decrease to the limits that allow the water to be treated and pumped safely.

Regarding the city of Raqqa, the directorate expected that water pumping would resume within the next few hours, unless new developments prevented this.

In the town of Maadan, high turbidity prevented the drinking water station from being restarted today, Friday. New turbidity measurements will be conducted tomorrow evening, Saturday, to determine the extent to which the pumps can be operated, and to make a decision based on the results of the tests.

This halt comes amid recent weather conditions and the impact of rain and flooding on water sources. The timing of pumping’s resumption remains tied to an improvement in river water quality and a reduction in turbidity levels to appropriate levels.
