Iranian militias in Deir Ezzor held condolence ceremonies in the Nasr Center, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) militia’s headquarters, and the city of al-Bukamal for a Shiite cleric who died in the Iraqi city of Karbala.
The dead cleric is Muhammad Sa’eed al-Tabtaba’i who is one of the most important Shiite religious authorities in al-Najaf, the second important Shiite in Iraq, and the fourth among Shiite clerics globally. Al-Tabtaba’i died due to a heart attack and was nominated to succeed al-Sistani as he adopted no political position.
Sunni sheikhs of Deir Ezzor attended the condolence ceremonies, especially as they are loyal to Iran and the Assad regime. Iran tries to entrench its leverage in the area and promote Shiism by holding Shiite ceremonies.
