Raqqa Governorate is suffering from a significant deterioration in the telecommunications sector, due to a shortage of internet towers and a weak cellular infrastructure within the city and its countryside.
This problem is due to the vandalism of a number of MTN and Syriatel towers during the period when the Syrian Democratic Forces took control of the area, which led to the cessation of communications services for consecutive months.
After this phase ended, cellular networks were partially restored across some of the city’s old towers and surrounding areas, but service remains weak and does not meet the needs of residents.
The people of Raqqa appealed to the Syrian Telecommunications Company and mobile phone companies to work on installing new towers and strengthening the network to cover the city and its countryside, ensuring the stability of the service and improving its quality.
As for the Internet, distribution centers rely on the Internet “metro” service coming from Iraq, passing through the city of Qamishli and arriving in Raqqa, which is a limited-speed service that does not meet the increasing demand.
The “Arsil” network is still operating in the governorate, amid a noticeable increase in the prices of SIM cards when available, in addition to the high cost of bands of units, in light of the absence of an approved center for them since the end of the Syrian Democratic Forces’ control over the area.
