In a first-of-its-kind initiative in international relations, His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Mikhail, visited Deir Ezzor Governorate at the invitation of the Euphrates Spikes Organization and in cooperation with the Aid Gate Organization.
This visit aims to enhance humanitarian cooperation and highlight the needs of Deir Ezzor Governorate, which has long suffered from the effects of war and neglect.
A DeirEzzor24 Network correspondent reported that the visit began with a meeting between the ambassador and several civil society activists, during which an in-depth discussion took place about the most prominent challenges hindering civil society and development efforts in Deir Ezzor Governorate.
The topics discussed included the weaknesses of infrastructure, the lack of sufficient resources, the complexities of the reconstruction process, and the urgent need to consolidate social cohesion and build trust among the local community’s components.
The most prominent priorities demanded by the region’s residents were also discussed, ranging from supporting the education and health sectors, improving basic services and livelihoods, strengthening the role of youth and women in public life, and ensuring the sustainability of early recovery efforts in various fields.
Our correspondent added that the ambassador conducted a field tour that included vital sites in the city, most notably the Euphrates Hospital, the suspension bridge, and the earthen bridge connecting the two banks of the Euphrates River, where he witnessed firsthand the daily struggles of the population in transportation. He also visited a number of damaged places of worship, including churches and mosques, most notably the Orthodox Church, which enabled him to see the profound impact of the war on the cultural and religious aspects of society.
In a special statement to DeirEzzor24, the ambassador described his first impression of the city as positive, praising the spirit of its people, full of vitality and patience, despite years of long suffering. He noted that, through his field meetings, he had witnessed the urgent need for urgent humanitarian and development interventions. He emphasized that, through his position, he would strive to convey the voice of the people of Deir Ezzor to international partners and relevant embassies, mobilizing support and refocusing attention on this forgotten city.
The ambassador emphasized that his meeting with local activists provided him with a deeper understanding of the reality facing Deir Ezzor , noting that he would work to encourage international bodies to pay greater attention to the city and prevent it from being marginalized and forgotten.
This visit marks a milestone in the history of diplomatic relations in Deir Ezzor Governorate, as it is the first visit of its kind by a foreign ambassador to this region. This visit opens new horizons for international cooperation and humanitarian advocacy, paving the way for a better future worthy of the city’s people and their sacrifices.
