On Monday, May 17, 2021, two suicides occurred in the Assad regime-controlled areas in Deir Ezzor.
The first incident occurred in the town of al-Kharitta in the western Deir Ezzor countryside, as people found the body of Ass’ad al-Omeir’s child who is 11 years old. It was revealed that the child hanged herself.
The second one occured in the town of al-Kashmah in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, as a 17-years-old child killed herself by her husband’s gun.
Both incidents occurred a week after a 12-years-old-child committed suicide in the village of al-Inbah in the western Deir Ezzor countryside. The child hanged herself one day before Eid al-Fitr.
Cases of committing suicide indicate increased rates of psychological pressure on the children and young men in the Assad forces-controlled areas in Deir Ezzor amidst the lack of care by the regime institutions for both categories.
