Today, January 10, marks a painful anniversary well known to the revolutionaries, free people of Deir Ezzor, and even the supporters and criminal security branches of Assad regime. It is the anniversary of the so-called “Massacre of Arab Observers”, which was carried out on January 1, 2012, by members of Assad’s forces and security branches, who killed 16 young peaceful protesters in Deir Ezzor.
The incident started with the arrival of an Arab observer mission in Deir Ezzor, who came to closely monitor the events taking place in the province. The coordination was only between the mission and Assad regime, while the peaceful movement activists were unable to reach the observers.
The coordinators of the peaceful movement in Deir Ezzor decided to stage demonstrations in a place where the observers can see them, but the security intelligence service knew about it, so it spread rumors that the mission would visit the public square, or what was known as “al-Basel Square”. On the next day, when the demonstrators gathered in the square and started chanting, security members surrounded the square and opened fire at the demonstrators. The operation was later found to be an ambush, as the observers were taken to another place.
The security service ambush resulted in the killing of 16 young people, whose funeral turned into one of the biggest demonstrations in Deir Ezzor, while the observer mission remained under Assad regime, and the information it presented to it.
