While inspecting mobile phones of civilians that go to ISIS-run internet salons in east Deir Ezzor countryside, the group’s members restore deleted WhatsApp chat conversations in an attempt to search for any signs of dissidence or info that could convict civilians.
ISIS continues to carry out sudden raids on internet salons in Deir Ezzor during which it inspects all chat conversations on social media, (mainly Facebook and Twitter) and videos in mobile phones belonging civilians.
Many civilians have lost their lives after expressing their opposing views on ISIS ideology on the net. Some were merely executed because of profile pictures that angered the group as it is the case in the town of al-Suwar, north Deir Ezzor countryside, where a Kurdish child was put to death after ISIS members inspected his WhatsApp chat conversation with one of his relatives who had the KRG flag on his profile picture.
ISIS arrested also a woman from west Deir Ezzor countryside two months ago after ISIS members inspected her phone conversations with her son. The woman told her son living in Turkey that he should not come to Deir Ezzor as long as it is under ISIS rule in a chat conversation while being in one of ISIS-run internet salons; however, she was released after being detained for several hours.
