A photo from Deir Ezzor won the 2019 Thomson Reuters award, the photo which was taken in Al-Baghuz area in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, shows a child standing in line with his mother at a medical point. The photo was taken by the colleague “Rodi Said,” and was displayed in a large international forum.
Deir Ezzor 24 met the photographer of the winning photo “Rodi Said,” and he said:
“I took the photo in late March 2019, near al-Baghuz town east of Deir Ezzor, after the people of al-Baghuz fled the heavy fighting in their town, they were standing in a line in front of a medical point near al-Baghuz.”
“Said” added:
“This child in the photo was standing with his mother in the line, waiting for their turn to receive first aid, food and water.”
He also said:
“I wanted to draw the world’s attention to a big problem after the end of Daesh, which is the unknown fate of these children, who had no sin in their parents’ deeds.”
As for the circumstances in which he took the photo, Rodi told Deir Ezzor 24:
“I stayed for about half an hour watching to take the photo that shows the child in the middle of blackness formed by the women’s clothes .”
He continued:
“Throughout my career as a professional photographer, I have covered many battles, but the Battle of al-Baghuz was the most important one as it marked the end of the bloody so-called “caliphate.” To me, the importance of this battle comes from the fact that the largest media of all continents were covering it.”
He concluded by saying:
I am Rodi Said from Ras al-Ain city in Hasakeh governorate, I have been working with Reuters since 2013, in covering the fighting in Syria. A year earlier, in 2012, I carried my camera and made a promise to cover the battles taking place in my city of Ras al-Ain. It is a great honor for me to receive this award, among tens and hundreds of professional Journalists and media personnel.
