The Water Resources Directorate in Al-Hasakah Governorate warned residents residing in the areas adjacent to the bed of the Khabur River, especially in the neighborhoods of Al-Nashwa, Ghuwayran, and Al-Meridian (Al-Meridian), of the risk of an exceptional rise in water levels that may cause flash floods.
The directorate explained that the flow rate in the river reached 120 cubic meters per second in Tal Tamr area, noting that the water supply began to gradually decline, but continued rainfall may lead to a new wave of rise.
In a measure to relieve pressure on the river’s course, the outlet of the Bab al-Hadid Dam was opened in the Jawadiya area, after storage there reached 6 million cubic metres, a level that exceeds the permissible capacity.
The Directorate urgently called on residents to evacuate immediately to safe areas, avoid approaching river banks or waterways, and monitor developments and report any emergency situations.
This warning comes in the context of the heavy rains that the area has recently witnessed, which have already led to partial floods that submerged dozens of homes in several neighborhoods in Hasakah, and cut off major roads such as the M4 international road in some sections of the city’s countryside.
