Local sources reported that a gas leak occurred in one of the pipelines at the Conoco plant, located in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor following dismantling operations targeting the plant’s production lines, carried out by workshops brought in by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The sources confirmed that the leak poses a direct threat to the lives of civilians living near the site, amid fears of suffocation incidents if urgent measures are not taken to address the situation.
In the same context, the SDF began dismantling and transferring a number of key pieces of equipment from the Conoco field and plant, using unqualified work crews. The equipment was reportedly moved to al-Hasakah province. The dismantled items included electrical transformers, storage tanks, and essential operating devices necessary to ensure the safe functioning of gas facilities.
Activists and specialized engineers warned that such haphazard procedures could cause severe environmental damage, in addition to posing a direct threat to public safety in the region.
