Truffles season has started in Deir Ezzor. The mushroom which French gourmet Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin called it “the diamond of the kitchen”, is now available in markets at a relatively high price because of the pricey delivery of shipments to the markets in the province. Truffles are hypogenous (underground) versions of mushrooms, they resemble small potatoes, and there are hundreds of different kinds of them.
Each year, the people of Deir Ezzor wait impatiently for the coming of truffle season. Upon its arrival, they go out in the countryside to pick it up.
They are characterized by their appetizing and delicious taste. There is an expensive kind of truffle called ‘’ al-Shuyukh’’ which is rare and hard to get in the province of Deir Ezzor. Truffles grow in Badiya of Albu Kamal and mainly in areas near Iraq due to heavy rainfall.
