The Al-Asharah crossing, which connects the city to the village of Darnaj in the Deir Ezzor countryside, has become a major burden on local residents. Crossing the Euphrates River using primitive boats poses a real danger to people’s lives, especially during the harsh winter months.

The crossing, which residents use daily to travel between the two riverbanks, has become a significant challenge, as it lacks even the most basic safety standards, putting individuals’ lives at serious risk.

In an exclusive interview with *Deir Ezzor 24*, Abu Karam, a resident of Al-Asharah, confirmed that the river crossings used daily by locals add yet another burden on them, particularly for women and children.
He said the suffering of residents intensifies in winter, when the dangers of the boat crossing increase due to severe weather conditions and freezing temperatures. He pointed to a recent incident in which an emergency case arrived at the crossing, but the delay in reaching the hospital because of the difficult crossing led to the patient’s death highlighting the magnitude of the danger facing the community.

In the same context, Hamed Al-Aboud, one of the workers at the crossing, spoke about the risks citizens face while crossing the Euphrates using these primitive boats, stressing that they pose a major threat to their lives. He added that the difficult economic situation in the region has made crossing costs very high, with the price reaching 10,000 Syrian pounds per person — a heavy burden on residents who are already suffering from poverty.

Under these harsh conditions, residents are appealing to the Syrian government and international organizations for urgent intervention to solve this problem either by repairing the Al-Asharah bridge or constructing a modern, safe crossing to ease their daily suffering. As time passes, the need grows more pressing for sustainable solutions that ensure residents’ safety and provide them with secure means of crossing.
