In a new security operation that reflects the continued efforts aimed at pursuing terrorist cells and drying up their sources of activity in Deir Ezzor Governorate, the General Intelligence Service, in cooperation with the Internal Security Forces in the governorate, was able to arrest two individuals belonging to a cell affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS, following a precise intelligence monitoring and follow-up operation that resulted in identifying the suspects and arresting them.

According to information announced by the competent authorities, the operation came within the framework of ongoing security efforts to pursue members involved in terrorist acts and assassinations in various areas of the governorate. Initial investigations revealed the detainees’ involvement in carrying out a series of assassinations targeting individuals, security personnel, and military personnel.

The latest of these operations targeted the member of the Ministry of Defense, Ibrahim Al-Jassem, who was shot near Al-Rashid Mosque in the city of Al-Mayadeen, in an incident that raised concerns about the movements of sleeper cells and their attempts to destabilize security in the region.

The results of the operation were not limited to the arrest of the two suspects, as the participating forces were able to seize and confiscate a group of weapons and ammunition that were found inside a hideout belonging to the cell, indicating that its members possessed weapons capabilities that were being used, according to investigations, to carry out their criminal activities and plan new operations.

These seizures gain additional importance in the context of security efforts aimed at limiting the organization’s ability to reconstitute its cells or provide secret stores of weapons and ammunition, especially in areas that previously witnessed the activity of its armed cells.

Following the arrest of the two suspects, the competent authorities continue their investigations to uncover the full circumstances of the case, determine the nature of the roles played by the two detainees, as well as track down any possible connections or extensions of the cell inside and outside the governorate.

Investigations also focus on identifying the parties that were communicating with the cell members, the sources of their obtaining weapons and ammunition, and the extent of other plans or operations that were being prepared to be implemented, in preparation for completing legal procedures and referring those involved to the competent judiciary.

This operation comes amid the ongoing security challenges facing Deir Ezzor province, following ISIS’s attempts to maintain the presence of secret cells capable of carrying out assassinations and sporadic targeting, despite the security and military strikes it has been subjected to over the past years.

The latest operation highlights the importance of coordination between intelligence agencies and internal security forces, and the role of proactive action and information gathering in thwarting terrorist plans before they are implemented, and protecting civilians and security and military institutions.
