Most residents of Deir Ezzor have recently resorted to subscribing to satellite internet due to the high prices of telecommunications packages, according to a correspondent for DeirEzzor24 Network.

Our reporter said that the high cost of internet packages on telecommunications networks has prompted a large segment of residents to subscribe to satellite internet services provided by small private companies that have recently begun to spread in Deir Ezzor.

The price of internet packages from local companies is equivalent to half of an employee’s income, and some even equal their entire monthly income, amid calls from residents to reduce them.

Othman al-Ahmad, a resident of the al-Qusour neighborhood in Deir Ezzor city, said, “I have to stand in the street, and sometimes sit in the satellite internet lounge to use it. This is due to the lack of extension cables reaching the building where I live, and the high prices of packages on the Syriatel and MTN networks have forced me to do so.”

Our correspondent confirmed that the monthly subscription price from satellite internet companies ranges between 40,000 and 50,000 Syrian pounds, and is subject to increase based on the customer’s request for increased speed.

The cost of a meter of cable extended from the box to the customer’s home ranges between 3,000 and 3,500 Syrian pounds, and the price of a router to operate the service at home is $17. Companies provide subscribers with routers that they retain, which are owned by the company, as many cannot afford to purchase a router.

He pointed out that, with the increasing demand for this service from residents, local companies have begun, over the past two days, to cover large areas of Deir Ezzor city, as a result of receiving dozens of subscription requests. This is the case in the neighborhoods of Al-Muwazafeen, Al-Jubailah, the road leading to Al-Dalla Roundabout, Al-Busraya Street, and Al-Madlaji Roundabout.

Satellite internet centers in Deir Ezzor city have begun competing with each other in terms of offering special offers and reducing prices. Some even offer free cable and routers to customers’ homes for the duration of the subscription period from the center.
