Russian warplanes have targeted several sites in the Conoco gas fields in eastern Deir Ezzor.
A military source within the SDF said, “Russian warplanes and regime artillery targeted our forces positions in the area around Conoco Gas fields.”
The source also said that SDF forces responded with artillery and mortar attacks on the location of the attacks from regime forces, but did not engage in direct combat.
“If Russian and Assad forces repeat such actions we will engage them in close combat.” The source said, reiterating that the SDF will continue to liberate eastern Deir Ezzor from Daesh.
In a recent press conference Russian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Igor Konashnikov said that there was no reason to bomb the SDF, stressing that the chance of it happening was impossible.
This is not the first time that SDF forces in Deir Ezzor have been targeted by Russian warplanes. On September 16th SDF positions were reportedly targeted by Russia in the industrial city, north east of Deir Ezzor city.
Russian airstrikes come amidst renewed tensions between the SDF and regime forces. Buthaina Shaaban, the Assad regime’s top political and media advisor, stated that the regime intended to fight “Kurdish militants” and stop their advance around Deir Ezzor.
