The residents of the village of Zgair Jazeera, west of Deir Ezzor, are facing increasing hardship due to the foul odors emitted by the oil burners spread across the nearby areas of Zgair and Sa’wa. According to residents’ testimonies, the smells are intense and cause shortness of breath, especially among children, creating a sense of worry and frustration within the local community.
Despite repeatedly submitting complaints to the authorities affiliated with the SDF militia, demanding that the burners be shut down or relocated away from residential areas, no concrete action has been taken so far, according to the residents. Some locals believe that certain SDF officials may be colluding with the owners of the burners, which worsens their suffering and complicates the chances of finding a quick solution to the environmental and health problem.
The villagers are calling for urgent intervention and strict oversight of the oil burners’ operations to protect residents’ health especially that of children and to limit the environmental damage they cause.
