The Syrian Army Operations Authority announced today, Monday, that a number of military bases near the Syrian – Iraqi border were subjected to a large-scale attack using drones, at dawn today.
The authority explained in an official statement that army units were able to confront most of the drones and shoot them down before they reached their targets, stressing that the damage was limited.
It stated that it is studying appropriate options for response, with the aim of neutralizing any potential threat and preventing the recurrence of attacks on Syrian territory.
In a related context, the Syrian Assistant Minister of Defense for the Eastern district, Siban Hammou, announced yesterday, Sunday, that the army forces repelled an attack by drones launched from inside Iraqi territory, targeting the American Qasrak base in northeastern Syria, which is the base where American forces are still stationed within the framework of the international coalition to combat ISIS.
Hammou held the Iraqi side responsible for the attack, calling for measures to be taken to prevent the recurrence of such operations that threaten the stability of the region.
On March 28, the Operations Authority reported that army units had repelled a similar attack targeting the Al-Tanf military base in the south of the country, noting that it came from Iraqi territory.
The authority also announced on March 22 that a military base in the Hasakah countryside had been bombed by five missiles, which were also launched from inside Iraqi territories.
