Local sources confirmed to D24 network that the Assad forces have imposed taxes on all the objects and goods, entering Al-Mayadeen city in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside.
The task of collecting taxes or “imposing customs duties”, as it is known locally, was assigned to the 4th division located in al-Mayadeen city, east of Deir Ezzor.
Since it controlled al-Mayadeen city in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, the 4th division of the Assad forces has set up military checkpoints at the entrances of Al-Mayadeen city to collect customs duties imposed on goods coming into the city, including those produced locally.
Al-Baloam checkpoint, which is located near al-Teb al-Hadith hospital in al-Mayadeen city, is the most important checkpoint for the 4th division, whose elements impose customs duties on all goods entering the city.
Al-Baloam checkpoint is important because it is located on the international road of Al-Mayadeen–Deir Ezzor, which is the lifeline for both the inhabitants and the Assad forces.
The 4th division also set another checkpoint near the political security branch building in the city, it has the same task as al-Baloam checkpoint and it is also important as it is located on the road between the cities of Al-Mayadeen and Al-Bukamal.
According to the sources, the checkpoint imposes customs duties on all the goods, foodstuffs or vegetables entering Al-Mayadeen city by road.
The local sources confirmed that al-Mayadeen city has been relying mainly on the neighboring villages for agricultural products, but the prices of these products in Al-Mayadeen differ from their prices in the villages that grow or produce these products because of the customs duties imposed on them.
It is noteworthy that the Assad regime has been relying on the customs duties imposed on local goods since it took control of Al-Mayadeen city east of Deir Ezzor in October 2017.
