The city of Al-Shaddadi, south of Al-Hasakah Governorate, has witnessed a noticeable escalation in incidents of theft and vandalism targeting public and private property, since the return of the Syrian state’s control over the city.
In the most recent of these incidents, a theft of electricity transformers was recorded today in Jisr al-Shaddadi neighborhood, where unknown individuals stole two electrical transformers with the aim of extracting copper from inside them, which caused direct damage to the electricity grid and caused power outages in a number of homes, which exacerbated the suffering of the residents, especially in light of the heavy reliance on electricity to manage their daily affairs.
This incident comes in the context of repeated similar acts over the past weeks, which sparked a state of popular discontent, amid demands to strengthen security patrols, tighten control over public property, and put an end to the phenomenon of sabotage affecting the infrastructure and basic services in the city.
