The Assad websites broadcast last Sunday a report on what it called was a Christmas tree-lighting in Deir Ezzor city, eastern Syria, after years of absence.
The report included interviews with a number of Deir Ezzor city residents, but no presence of Deir Ezzor Christians was observed, with Shabbiha and heads of the government services in the Assad regime participating in the ceremony.
Although the Assad’s forces have taken control of large areas of Deir Ezzor, Christians have not returned to the province for several reasons, which many see as being associated with the loss of security in the region.
The Assad regime seeks to play on minorities in Syria, but failed to do so in Deir Ezzor, the Armenians living in Deir Ezzor did not return to it despite the control of the Assad’s forces on the city, that is, Christians’s return to Deir Ezzor is not linked to the control of the Assad regime.
It is noteworthy that the Assad regime traded the Christians presence in the areas of its control, and has killed a large number of them in the military operations launched on the areas beyond his control.
