Dozens of farmers and peasants staged a sit-in this morning in front of the Farmers Union building in the city of Raqqa, demanding the improvement of the agricultural situation and the provision of the necessary support to agricultural associations, in addition to the dismissal of the union’s president.
The protesters raised demands related to the necessity of activating the union’s role in supporting farmers and securing their supplies, stressing that the union president did not perform the tasks assigned to him, especially with regard to responding to farmers’ complaints and securing support for agricultural associations.
Farmers from the northern, eastern and western countryside of Raqqa participated in the sit-in, calling on the concerned authorities to intervene urgently to support the agricultural sector and provide the basic needs that ensure the continuation of their work.
A number of protesters confirmed that their agricultural lands were severely damaged as a result of the floods and heavy rains that hit the Raqqa countryside during the past period, especially in the northern countryside, which led to a decline in production and increased economic burdens on them.
The protesters called on the government to take immediate measures to compensate those affected and support agricultural associations, which would contribute to alleviating losses and improving the agricultural situation in the district.
