The Director General of the Euphrates Dam Corporation, Haitham Bakkour , announced that the filling rate of the Euphrates lakes exceeded 97% as a result of the continued abundant rainfall this year, in addition to the increasing amounts of water coming through the Euphrates River.
Bakkour explained that the corporation decided to raise the quantities of water passing through the Kidiran Dam in the coming days from about 500 cubic meters per second to about 800 cubic meters per second, in order to avoid any rapid and dangerous rise in water levels inside the lakes.
He pointed out that this increase will lead to an additional rise in the level of the Euphrates River in the areas located after the dam, especially in the governorates of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, stressing at the same time that the situation does not pose any danger to the villages and towns extending on both sides of the river.
The institution called on residents, especially those living on the banks of the Euphrates, not to approach the river or swim in it during the coming period, with the need to expedite the withdrawal and lifting of agricultural equipment near the banks to avoid any potential damage.
Bakkour explained that the rise in water levels may continue for several days until the amounts of water intake and discharge through the dam stabilize.
