Today, the people of Al-Shaitat commemorated the anniversary of the Al-Shaitat massacre in the town of Abu Hamam, east of Deir Ezzor, amid continued demands from the families of the victims to reveal the fate of the missing and hold accountable those responsible for the killings, arrests and displacement committed by ISIS.
The massacre began during the summer of 2014, and targeted the towns of Abu Hamam, Al-Kashkiya, and Gharanij, in one of the most violent crimes committed by the organization against the people of the region.
According to the Association of Families of Victims of the Shaitat Massacre, about 900 victims have been documented so far, in addition to more than 24 mass graves, while the identities of a number of the remains found in those graves remain undetermined.
The families of the victims are demanding that the truth be revealed, that the names of the dead and missing be documented, that the fate of those whose fate remains unknown be determined, and that those responsible for the crimes that affected the people of the region be held accountable.
Twelve years later, the wounds of the Shaitat massacre remain open in the memories of the people, while the families of the missing await news that will dispel years of waiting and give them the right to know the fate of their children. Between the mass graves and the memories that were not absent, the people’s demand remains the same: to reveal the truth, do justice to the victims, and hold accountable those who committed those crimes.
