After the FSA gained grounds in the city of Deir Ezzor in 2012, the Assad-regime deployed one of the brigades of the Republican Guards being led by Colonel Ali Khazam. He had close ties with the Assad regime and was known among his supporters as Assad Baba Amro because of the atrocity which he committed on the open in Baba Amro neighborhood of Homs.
He carried out several unspeakable massacres by executing several civilians in horrific ways in both, Al-Joura and Al-Qusour, neighborhoods of Deir Ezzor. His militia was like a death squad group patrolling the streets of the city and chasing anyone suspected of dissidence.
The language of destruction and the killing of the innocent was the only language he and his group understood. Mass graves, fire squad executions and torture became commonplace during his presence in Deir Ezzor.
On September 06, 2012, he was killed in a mortar attack by the FSA in Deir Ezzor, stamping out one of the members of the Assad-regime killing machine.
Ali Khazzam was born in Al-Karadha which is also the birthplace of all the Assad family. He was one of the most important men for Basil Al Assad, the brothers of Bashar Al Assad, who was killed in a car accident.
Khazzam became the right hand of Mahir Al-Assad because of his military capability and loyalty to the family Al Assad. He also appeared in a video which was published in 2011 along with Asam Zahraddin, showing both of them stamping the dead bodies of the FSA in Duma. He is responsible for the destruction of Baba Amro neighborhood and the atrocity in Homs in 2010.
