Large areas of agricultural land were flooded as a result of the flooding of the Balikh River in the northern countryside of Raqqa, following an unprecedented rise in water levels as a result of heavy rainfall during the past hours.

Local sources reported that several areas were affected by the floods, most notably the vicinity of the town of Hazima and the village of Raqqa Samra, where water flooded about 4,000 dunams of land planted with strategic crops, causing major losses to farmers and creating a state of anxiety in the region.

Farmers described what happened as an “agricultural disaster”, calling on the concerned authorities to intervene urgently to mitigate the damage and secure mechanisms to clean agricultural drains, the blockage of which contributed to worsening the situation.

The affected people also called for the formation of an independent investigation committee to determine the causes of the floods and hold accountable those responsible for the negligence, stressing that the absence of preventive measures increased the extent of the losses.
