Large numbers of remnants of war and mines left behind by Iranian-backed militias and former regime forces are scattered throughout the Ma’dan and al-Tabni deserts in the western Deir Ezzor countryside, according to a reporter of the DeirEzzor24 Network.

Our reporter said that those most affected by these unexploded ordnance, and landmines in particular, are herders, who are no longer able to reach the outskirts of the towns of Ma’dan Atiq and al-Tabni from the desert side due to the widespread presence of these hazards.

Malik al-Alwan, a livestock trader, said that after the fall of the former regime, most livestock owners returned to their homes in the western Deir Ezzor countryside, specifically Ma’dan and al-Tabni, coming from the areas of Hasakah and Raqqa, where they had sought refuge during years of displacement.

He added that they are now facing significant difficulties due to the spread of remnants of war in the Ma’dan and al-Tabni deserts.

He explained that access to the outskirts of these towns has become difficult due to landmines planted just days before the fall of the former regime, in addition to war remnants dating back to the period when Daesh-controlled the area.

Residents appealed to the relevant authorities to conduct campaigns to comb and remove mines and war remnants from the desert and the surrounding areas of the towns of Maadan and al-Tabni in the western Deir Ezzor countryside.

It’s worth noting that the 66th Division of the Ministry of Defense has recently been conducting similar campaigns to remove mines and war remnants in and around Deir Ezzor city.
