The security branches share control of the main checkpoints at the entrances to Deir Ezzor. This has enabled them to generate millions of SYP daily. The military security operates the Salhiya checkpoint, which monitors the regime’s land crossing with the “SDF” at the city’s northern entrance, while the political security controls Al-Tala’a checkpoint at the western entrance to the city, which is considered its gate to the western countryside of “Shamiya” of Raqqa province.
Air Force Intelligence mans the military airport checkpoint known as the Air Force Checkpoint, which is located at the eastern entrance to the city, which connects it to the eastern countryside of Al-Shamiya to Al-Bukamal border. On the other hand, the State Security branch controls the Panorama checkpoint at the city’s entrance.
This reality reflects the policy of arbitrariness and extortion practiced by Assad and his militias against civilians. The operatives of the checkpoints harrass and blackmail passers-by by forcing them to pay tens of thousands to drop trumped-up charges against them at the checkpoints. They are forced to pay hundreds of thousands at the detachments, and millions in the branches. Furtheremore, they confiscate people possessions and force them to pay “royalties’ in exchange for allowing them to bring in materials and goods. The 4th Division also share with all parties the incomes which it generates from the customs tax.
In addition to the aforesaid checkpoints, other checkpoints are distributed within the western and eastern countryside of the province. The six northern countryside villages are under the control of the Russian militias represented by the Quds Brigade, the Fifth Corps and the Iranian militias represented by their sectarian brigades and battalions, in addition to the National Defense.
