In an offensive launched against Daesh positions in Mount Thurdah, located near the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, yesterday, Assad forces took control on new areas, including Thurdah 2 and 3, while Thurdah 1 is still under the group control. The offensive was backed by intense Assad-regime and Russian air strikes on the terrains held by Daesh in Mount Thurdah. Four days ago, Assad forces also began an attack on Daesh in Deir Ezzor and seized control over Al-Tiseen barricade, which lies in the vicinity of the military airport.
Fierce clashes have been also taking place in and around the village of Al-Bughayliyah between Assad forces and Daesh for three days. The clashes erupted when Assad forces, under intense air cover, attacked Daesh positions in the village, capturing several new areas located near Al-Ruwad Residential Buildings and Al-Ruwad hill.
The Assad-regime is attempting to retake Al-Bughayliya because of its strategic significance. It has large swaths of agricultural lands, which can be utilized as a source of vegetables for the besieged areas. The main water plant, Al-Bassel, which supplies the besieged areas with water, is also located in Al-Bughayliyah.
By attacking Daesh in several positions in Deir Ezzor, the regime is also seeking to capture more areas around the military airport to secure the landing and taking off of the cargo planes, which have been delivering food, fuel, ammunition and weaponry to Assad forces in Deir Ezzor.
These series of attacks come in light of appointing Hassan Mohamed as the new commander of Assad forces in the eastern Syrian region, after brigadier Mohamed Khadur was recently dismissed.
