Maintenance workshops at the Simalka border crossing resumed installation work on the floating bridge, after it fell out of service as a result of the heavy rains and floods that the area witnessed in mid-March.
According to a source in the crossing administration, maintenance work is proceeding according to the established plan, with expectations that the bridge will be restarted within the next two days, if the water level of the Tigris River stabilizes and does not witness a new rise.
The concerned authorities had taken alternative measures to ensure the continuation of movement, as the passage of passengers and goods was temporarily diverted to the “Al-Walid” crossing, which contributed to reducing the impact of the bridge’s suspension on commercial and civilian movement.
The Simalka Bridge is a vital outlet in the area, as it facilitates the movement of goods and crossings between the two sides of the border.
