The city of Raqqa has witnessed an intensive traffic crisis over the past few days, especially in markets and main streets, with vehicle traffic increasing significantly.

The peak congestion is concentrated in the hours before Iftar, in addition to the period following Tarawih prayers, as the main roads and roundabouts witness traffic jams that impede traffic and delay citizens’ arrival at their destinations.

Ahmed Al-Abdullah, a taxi driver, said that it is necessary to activate road traffic lights urgently within the city, stressing the importance of preventing large vehicles, especially agricultural ones, from entering the city center after the afternoon hours to relieve pressure on vital streets.

For their part, a number of residents appealed to the Internal Security Forces to increase the number of traffic police officers, and to deploy fixed and mobile platoons on main roads and roundabouts, with the aim of regulating traffic and reducing violations that contribute to worsening congestion.

Observers attribute the worsening crisis to the return of numbers of Raqqa residents to their city from Damascus and Aleppo, which led to a noticeable increase in the number of vehicles, amid demands for rapid regulatory measures that contribute to reducing traffic congestion and improving the flow of movement within the city.
